Something has died in our crawl space. Yesterday afternoon, the kitchen starting stinking, and I couldn't figure out where the smell was coming from. I thought perhaps it was from the trash can.
I stirred a lot of dust yesterday, so my nose was all stopped up from the allergies. Hubby got home and he said, "Ooohhh! What smells like dead fish?" So, it wasn't just me, and it apparently smelled worse than I thought. He stuck his head outside, and he felt certain that it was coming from the crawl space under the house.
He said he'd check it out tomorrow. Well, I think Annabelle and I may have to get out of this house today. Now, not only does the kitchen stink, but the smell has moved to the dining room, living room and office. Keep in mind, my house isn't very big, so we don't have many rooms to hide from the smell (our bedroom, Annabelle's bedroom, the hall and the bathroom)!
This couldn't be good for us to be breathing either!
Update as of 8:17 p.m. on Friday:
Annabelle and I left as soon as we were dressed this morning. She didn't complain once about the smell. We didn't even eat breakfast at home. Chick-fil-A was calling our name! We spent the day shopping and with Grandmama and Granddaddy. We just arrived home around 7:30 p.m.
Hubby came home around lunch time. He ventured into the crawl space with his pants tucked into his shoes, a long-sleeve shirt, a hat and a bandanna covering his mouth.
The verdict: Yes, something was definitely dead, but it was unrecognizable. Per hubby, it was either a cat or a opossum. Apparently, all that was left was a jaw bone, back bone, teeth and fur. And, of course, it was covered with maggots!
Where is this creature resting right now? Anyone want to guess? In a garbage bag in our trash can! Yuck! Trash day isn't until Tuesday, so I have requested that hubby haul that thing off elsewhere. We'll see if he follows the request.
And, my house still stinks even though hubby doesn't smell a thing!

My guess would be if it were an opposum it would have a long, snouty nose. (I think the bone for it's nose would extend out more than a cat. If it were a raccoon it probably would have a little shorter nose than opposum and more pronounced than a kitty cat. I really don't want to identify it for you by seeing it, but that would be a clue. And I think an opposum would have a tail that was thicker at the stump than a cat or raccoon. I stand corrected if anyone else can shed other light on the subject.
I'm sure the smell will linger a while longer. Maybe a little removal of the dirt underneath the dead body might hasten the removal of the stench and don't hesitate to spray, spray, spray the Lysol spray on the cleaned out spot.
Maggots? Yuck! Nature has its own way of taking care of stuff, especially when the buzzards can't reach it.
Good luck getting a little fresh air and smell and sleep for the night.
Sorry you're having to go through this, but I'm proud of your hubby for handling it for you.
UGH! I would've paid someone to come out and haul that thing away - Randy doesn't have the manliness in him to do that. Go ANDY!!!
Pour kitty little or lime over the area and that will help. Mom and dad are dealing with flying squirrels in their attic right now and it's awful.
