Threats

I was left with threats as my only alternative today. Not really, but it sounded good. And, the best part, it actually worked, today, probably not tomorrow, but today.

You see, Annabelle will not pick up after herself. Obviously, yet again, I have failed in Child Rearing 101. I am swearing to do better with this next one. Ha!

She pulls out everything she owns, everything I own, plus some. And when told, "Annabelle, you need to put your toys away before you pull out anything else," she responds with, "No." And, apparently, time outs don't work so well with this child.

So, today, I threatened her. Not with time out. Not with a spanking. But, I threatened to throw her toys away into the trash can if she didn't pick them up. For some reason, that made a believer out of her. Again, for today. We will see what tomorrow brings.

But, in order for this to work, I am going to have to follow through. So, I think I'm changing my threat to dump any toy left around into a trash bag to be placed into the attic where she cannot play with it for a very long time, if ever again.

Anyone have any other tips for getting a three year old to clean up after him/herself?

No tips particularly, but that did work with your brother's favorite red truck when he was probably around 7, 8, or 9. And I think it just tramatized the poor kid. He remembered it as soon as I pulled the truck out years later for his own sons to play with. I don't remember having to do it except that one time, but in re-thinking it, I'm certainly not sure it kept him from leaving things out later. I was just in one of my very rare moods that particular day. You remember my moods, don't 'cha? Good luck with it.

Wow, way to bring out the big guns, girl! I'll have to use that one in the future....

I have resorted to putting the toy in question 'in time out' ...also works when a toy is not being shared nicely with friends.

we do the 'you can't pull something new out until we put the first toy away' ...and Annalee is just now getting the concept. (brighter days ahead!) I usually have to help and say ...i'll pick up 3 things you pick up 2...ect.

of coarse ...it only works on my most patient days :D
